REALTOR® Safety
Your safety is essential to your success. As a REALTOR®, you often meet new clients, work alone, and enter unfamiliar properties—making safety awareness a critical part of your daily business.
Why REALTOR® Safety Matters
Real estate professionals face unique risks, including working alone, meeting unknown individuals, and hosting open houses. Taking proactive steps to protect yourself not only supports your well-being—it also builds professionalism and confidence in your business.
Personal Safety Best Practices
When Meeting Clients
- Always meet new clients in a public place first (office, coffee shop, etc.)
- Verify identity—ask for ID and keep a record
- Share your meeting schedule with a colleague or trusted contact
- Trust your instincts—if something feels off, remove yourself
During Property Showings
- Let someone know where you are and when you expect to finish
- Park where you can’t be blocked in
- Keep your phone charged and accessible
- Walk behind clients when entering a home
- Avoid confined spaces (like basements) with individuals you don’t know well
- Be aware of exits at all times
Hosting Open Houses
- Inform your office or a colleague of your open house schedule
- Secure valuables and prescription medications
- Keep personal belongings out of sight
- Limit the number of visitors in the property at one time
- Ask visitors to sign in and provide contact information
- Avoid hosting alone if possible
Office & Brokerage Safety
- Implement a visitor sign-in policy
- Keep doors secured and limit access to authorized individuals
- Establish check-in procedures for agents in the field
- Provide safety training and regular reminders
- Encourage a “buddy system” for high-risk activities
Technology & Cybersecurity Safety
Protecting your data is just as important as protecting yourself.
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication
- Be cautious of phishing emails and suspicious links
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions
- Keep client information confidential and secure
- Regularly update devices and software
Emergency Preparedness & Situational Awareness
Being prepared can make all the difference.
- Always have a fully charged phone with emergency contacts programmed
- Know your location and exits in every property
- Carry a personal safety device if desired (whistle, alarm, app)
- Practice awareness—limit distractions like excessive phone use
- Develop a personal safety plan for different scenarios
